The Christchurch School of Music Samba Band was established in 2001 when the CSM purchased a set of samba bateria (percussion) instruments from Brazil. The band is primarily made up of past and present students of the CSM World Percussion Course, also includes members of Pandemonium and percussion students from various Christchurch secondary schools. It performs in the traditional styles of samba batucada and samba reggae, as well as fusing elements of American, European and Pacific music into the samba style. One notable departure from the traditional batucada bands is the incorporation of a brass and saxophone section.
The band is made up of members ranging in age from primary school to retired adults, and regularly performs for community and commercial events such as the Christchurch and Timaru Christmas parades, the annual Re-Percussion Concert, Classical Sparks, the Latin Dance Festival, the Lyttelton Summer and Winter Carnivals, and major sporting and corporate events.
